Wedding poem for gay couple
It was believed that Emily Dickinson was romantically linked to her childhood friend and sister-in-law Susan Gilbert. Dickinson wrote roughly 1, poems in her lifetime, but many were published after her death. Unfortunately, it is speculated that Gilbert was purposefully left out of Dickinson's work by her publisher.
Inspiration
Reading work by these queer writers felt like a way of incorporating these other families into the ceremony -- the family of writers and their work, and the family we've created around it. I emailed Kristen Nelson who I'd not previously met beforehand to ask if she was comfortable having her poem read in the context of a wedding ceremony, and she was thrilled, as an officiate herself.
